Galerie Louis & Sack is delighted to announce the first solo show by Japanese artist Yukiya Izumita in France, following on from his presentation at the gallery since 2022.
At the occasion of Printemps Asiatique Parih, the exhibition
‘Stratified Matter’ will take place in our gallery, Cour de Rohan.
Yukiya Izumita (b.1966) has established himself as one of the most innovative ceramists from his isolated kiln in the Tohoku region of north-east Japan. He seamlessly integrates the specific geographical elements of Iwate prefecture - its harsh northern climate and rural location by the sea - into black, yellow and red clay. Izumita transports the coastal clay to her studio by hand in huge loads. Her creations are born from what is washed ashore, and the water-soaked salvaged pieces provide a rudimentary salt-fired element that looks rustic and ancient, coated in a rare manganese glaze.
Izumita's expression of rock, geochronology and tumultuous landscapes is deeply linked to the types of objects he sculpts. His rhythmic, dynamic sheets of clay, folded into spirals and layered, are like tides breaking on the shore.
Yukiya Izumita's works are exhibited throughout Japan and the United States. They are also held in international public collections, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. In Japan, Izumita has received numerous awards, including the Prize for Excellence at the 20th Japan Biennial Ceramic Art Exhibition in 2009 and the Grand Prize at the Asahi Ceramic Exhibition in 2000 and 2002.
